the stoic
is a coiled piece which is has been made in three sections :- the base, main body and lid. The bottom section of representative a period at art school, learning, training and discovery. The second section represents a world of work, earning a living and the commitment and duty that all of that can entail. The third section is the period in retirement and a return to creative discovery when the time constraint that having to earn a living dictates, no longer exists.
The stoic is made from white-earthenware/white St Thomas clay. All three sections have been coiled, sprigged and indented with pattern then fired to 1160c. Coloured glaze has been rubbed into the carving and wiped away, as well as being painted on to the surface area before being fired to 1080c. Coloured enamels, gold lustre, platinum lustre, mother-of-pearl lustre and enamel transfers have then been applied to some areas of the outside and fired again to 800c. It has been exhibited at 44AD Bath as part of a TAG exhibition and is named, signed and dated by the artist 2017.
