east berlin
East Berlin is a coiled piece which is part of a series of works made following visits abroad. It is made from white earthenware clay, which stands approximately 30 cm high and 20 cm in diameter. It is carved with images of the eastern block style architecture seen in parts of Berlin. The piece has then been indented with pattern and fired to 1160 c. Coloured glaze has been rubbed into the carving and wiped away, as well as being painted on to the surface area before being fired to 1080 c. Coloured enamels, gold and mother-of-pearl lustres and enamel transfers made using photographs taken from a visit to Berlin, have then been applied to some areas of the outside and fired again to 800 c. When the glazing process has been completed, small objects and enamel badges bought back from the trip have been glued to the piece. This piece is intended as a 3-D postcard following the visit. This piece has been exhibited in the Victoria Art Gallery Bath.
