eden and paradise lost
eden
This piece is made by coiling white earthenware/white St Thomas clay into an almost cylindrical shape, housing a spherical lid. A snake is modelled and coils its way around the piece holding it tightly in its grip. The work has been indented with a grid of square areas and then fired to 1160c. Black glaze has been rubbed into the indentation and wiped away and then clear glaze has then been painted on to the surface area before being fired to 1080c. Transfers of fruit and veg. have been fitted into the square grid and then a final enamel firing to 800c. Small tablets with images of the natural world and charities supporting the care of our world, have been attached with glue. Enamel bird badges from RSPB fly around the rim. The snake is decorated with a snakeskin-like cash collage, of fake £10 notes. Eden sits on three jars of natural resources and the world rests precariously on top. The imagery really needs no explanation.
It is named and dated by the artist 2022. This piece was entered and was shortlisted by the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2022, and is in the RWA Autumn Open Exhibition until January 2024

paradise lost
'Paradise Lost' is one of a pair of pieces about our changing climate. The sister piece is called ‘eden’.
This piece is made by coiling white earthenware/white St Thomas clay into an almost cylindrical shape, housing a hand modelled lid in the shape of a world war II hand grenade lid. The piece has been indented with shapes which will contain transfers of flora and fauna then fired to 1160c. Black glaze has been rubbed into the indentation and wiped away and then clear glaze has then been painted on to the surface area before being fired to 1080c. Transfers of fruit and veg. have been fitted into the shapes and then a final enamel firing to 800c. The work sits on three jars of smashed glass, metal and bits of concrete. The imagery really needs no explanation. £1800 for the pair
